Frequently Asked Questions About Oakland BLS Classes

Q: What is the advantage of having a BLS certification class at my business? Currently, we send our staff to a local classroom in Oakland with scheduled BLS classes.

A: Many of our instructors are EMTs and Paramedics who have years of arriving at businesses via a 911 call.  It’s not uncommon for them to find a panicked staff who is disorganized and sometimes even arguing about how to help.  When company employees do not train together, they’re frequently not on the same page about how to respond. When we come to your Oakland business for a BLS class, we will train your staff how to respond as a group in your office.  It’s the best way to prepare your staff to do provide BLS as a team.

Q: I did an online-only BLS CPR renewal certification class and my Oakland work supervisor rejected it.  Why!?

A: Never do an online-only BLS certification class. Those certifications are not accepted by any healthcare organization.  And they shouldn’t be!  You need to practice the skills of that course to be able to perform them in a real medical emergency.  We teach the American Heart Association’s BLS Provider CPR certification course.  It’s the required certification for anyone who works in a clinic or hospital in Oakland.  The AHA now has an approach called, “blended learning” that allows you to do a lot of the course online, but you still need to have a BLS “skills session” with an instructor.  It’s usually 1 to 1.5 hours of hands-on practice time with the CPR manikins, AED trainers and BVMs.  It results in the same BLS certification as doing the entire course in-person with an instructor.  Ask us about blended learning.

Q: I’ve heard there is a particular BLS CPR certification requirement for healthcare professionals in Oakland.  What is that certification?

A: If you work in healthcare you need a different CPR certification than what people in non-medical jobs need.  We instruct the American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR certification for Oakland.  Clinics and hospitals in California follow AHA guidelines, so they usually require the AHA’s BLS certification.  If you work in EMS (EMT, Paramedic) the Red Cross’ BLS certification is usually accepted as well.

Q: Which professions are required to get a Oakland BLS certification – the CPR certification for healthcare professionals?

A: First off, always ask us if you’re not sure which certification you or your staff is required to have.  We know BLS certification job requirements.  These professions are required to have a BLS certification in Oakland: RN, CNA, Medical Assistant, Dentist, Dental Hygienist, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Respiratory Therapist, Medical Technician, EMT, Paramedic.

Q: I was told I need a BLS CPR class for my work in Oakland. What is BLS?

A: We instruct American Heart Association’s BLS Provider CPR classes in Oakland.  It’s a confusing class name and often gets spoken or written in shorter or longer versions of the official title.  It’s the CPR certification for everyone who works in healthcare or is a healthcare student. BLS stands for “Basic Life Support”. The title “Healthcare” was recently removed from the name, so you will see “BLS for Healthcare Providers” still printed as the name of the course – and we still include it in our website to cue people in that’s the class for healthcare professionals.

Q: I work in healthcare in Oakland. Am I required to take a BLS class?

A: If you work in healthcare or are a healthcare student, you are required to have a BLS Provider certification.  California hospitals and clinics follow American Heart Association CPR class guidelines and often require a BLS Provider certification — and will not accept any other organization’s certification.  Other healthcare industries that require BLS certifications include dentists, physical and occupational therapists.  We always instruct American Heart Association BLS certification classes for Oakland offices.

Q: How long is an Oakland American Heart Association BLS certification valid for?

A: All AHA BLS certifications last for two years.  There are two different ways you can take a BLS renewal certification class.  1) We can come to your Oakland office or home and instruct the entire BLS class.  2) You can do some of the BLS course online ahead of time.  Then our instructor comes to you for a BLS “skills session” – the hands-on portion of the class: practicing with the CPR manikins and other BLS training supplies.  Both approaches result in the American Heart Association BLS certification.  You will receive your BLS certification card the day of your class.

Q: Are you now issuing eCards for BLS certifications in Oakland?

A: Yes, eCards are now replacing the traditional paper BLS certification cards in Oakland.  It’s a much better approach in our opinion.  Over the years we have replaced hundreds of lost or destroyed BLS cards. With eCards you always have access to your BLS certification.  Your BLS certification can be printed like a traditional paper card or it can be downloaded as a PDF file.  You can email to whoever needs to verify your certification.

My family had the pleasure of having Chris teach us a class that, in my opinion, is not an option if you choose to have children – it’s mandatory.

I recently completed a CPR class with Chris, and I urge anyone who is interested in taking a CPR class to take Chris’ class; you’ll be happy you did. Chris is a natural teacher, and he has an easy going and very likable personality.
